InSight successfully landed on Mars on 26 November 2018. Due to excessive dust on its solar panels preventing it from recharging, NASA put InSight in low-power mode for detecting seismic events in July 2022 and continued monitoring the lander through the operational period ending in December 2022.

InSight : The Little Lander That Could
On 14 Dec. (Sol1440), telemetry received over our MRO overflight, the lnSight lander showed signs of surprising battery voltages. Our knee in the curve for battery voltage may be higher than originally projected. This was also an indication that Dead Bus could be a possibility.
On Sunday 18 Dec. (Sol 1444), we did not receive telemetry over the scheduled ODY overflight. The orbiter hailed and listened, but did not receive anything from the surface. At the point the team had narrowed the situation to three possibilities: The lander is operating normally and the comm pass on Sol 1443 (17 Dec.) was missed due to some unknown cause. We consider this extremely unlikely. Since we did not get the new three-week sequence on board (SciMon 133) during the Saturday comm, the lander would have transitioned to its “runout” sequence, an additional week-long sequence that is appended to each 2-week SciMon sequence in case a new sequence doesn’t make it on board in time. The lander is in SAFE MODE. Safe mode reverts to a comm schedule stored on board called the WUTT (Wake Up Time Table). On 19 Dec., the operation team listened on DSS-14, over the X-band pass scheduled in the WUTT, but did not receive any signals. The lander is in Dead Bus mode. This is the most likely scenario. In this case we would not hear from the lander either on the next scheduled pass, today 19 Dec. (ODY_NSY_2022_354_04).
The Project will be holding a status meeting shortly after the next scheduled overflight (ODY_NSY_2022_354_04, Last bit time 2022-354T19:30:42.000 UTC 2022-12-20 11:30:42 PST). The Lander and SEIS are nominal except for the battery and this decline to Dead Bus is now expected. No Anomaly Response Team will be formed, as the project has set the criteria of two unexplained missed passes to call End Of Mission (EOM). The Project will send an updated status once we know more.

Who Was Nancy Grace Roman?
Known as the “mother of the Hubble Space Telescope,” Nancy Grace Roman was born May 16, 1925 in Nashville, Tennessee, and died December 25, 2018. From a young age, Roman showed an interest in astronomy, and when she was 11 years old she organized a club with her classmates in Reno, Nevada. In this club they learned about constellations and celestial objects from a book. By high school, Roman realized that she had a passion for astronomy and wanted to pursue it. Her academic prowess was highlighted when she participated in an accelerated program and graduated in three years from Baltimore’s Western High School.
